John Granacki - Painting

I've been painting since shortly after high school, having had to temporarily change my major from Physics to Art while catching up on all the math I'd been avoiding for the previous four years. Once that was accomplished I had fallen so in love with art and painting that I changed to a Computer Engineering major and soon became a pioneer of digital art, eagerly anticipating the computerized animation boom, which alas has taken another thirty years to get where it is today--almost in full swing, but not quite... Now I make most of my living from Internet publishing & marketing. This career uses a lot of my art skills, but there is still something quasi-mystical and compelling about painting a good old-fashioned canvas. It seems that painting has made an indelible impression on my neural architecture and I just can't seem to stop, despite constant pressure to use my time for more lucrative pursuits. It's just as well, computers not yet being fast enough to do animation the way I'd like to do it, and besides which, my tech-time is now devoted almost exclusively devoted to molecular nanotechnology.

I have been exhibiting my art locally for over fifteen years and have been a semi-regular participant in our First Friday Art Night festivities from the event's inception.

My style is decidedly illustrative, probably because of my scientific mindset and passion for deep reality. My subject matter tends toward fantasy, however, because another side of me doesn't especially care for everyday reality. Occasionally my warring halves call a truce and collaborate, and I/we think it is then that my/our work is at its best.

I like working large whenever I can and have produced more than a few murals about town, including one for the now-defunct Blue Pine Brew Pub, another on the east side-door to the Grants Pass Museum of Art building, and the recently completed brick & ivy angel at the Old Town Antique Mall, in the alley off of 6th Street between H and I.

On top of everything else, I am also a graduate of Rogue Community College.
